Grade beam concrete volume

Grade Beam Concrete Calculator

Estimate concrete for a rectangular grade beam from the net beam length, width, and depth you supply, with an optional percentage for waste.

Grade-beam quantity

Enter the grade-beam dimensions

Use the net beam length and uniform section dimensions. Exclude pads, columns, slabs, and any overlap already counted elsewhere.

Enter dimensions and choose a waste allowance, then calculate.

Concrete volume with waste—yd³
Volume with waste in cubic feet—ft³
Volume with waste in cubic meters—m³
Raw geometric volume before waste—yd³

How the grade-beam calculation works

The calculator multiplies net length × width × depth for the raw rectangular volume, then applies the selected 0%, 5%, 10%, or 15% arithmetic waste allowance. It reports the adjusted quantity in cubic yards, cubic feet, and cubic meters and keeps the raw volume visible for comparison.

Verified example

30 ft × 12 in × 24 in grade beam with 10% waste

2.44 yd³66.00 ft³

Independently derived case A starts at 60 cubic feet and applies 10%, producing 66 cubic feet, or about 2.44 cubic yards.

Measurement tips

  • Add only the net length of beam sections with the same width and depth.
  • At intersections or connections, assign shared volume to one section only so it is not counted twice.
  • Exclude pad footings, piers, columns, and slabs unless their volume is intentionally included in these dimensions.
  • Use section dimensions selected by plans or a qualified professional; this calculator does not size the beam.

Grade Beam Concrete Formula Reference

Reviewed relationship

For dimensions supplied by the user, the calculator treats the concrete section as a rectangular prism:

raw volume = net grade-beam length × beam width × beam depth

adjusted volume = raw volume × (1 + selected waste percentage)

The waste selection is optional in effect because 0% is available and is the default. It is simple arithmetic, not a recommendation about ordering, placement conditions, or supplier minimums.

Geometry and overlap convention

Net length means the length assigned to the grade beam after removing any portion already counted as a pad, pier, column, wall, slab, or another crossing section. At an intersection, count shared concrete in one component only. If beam sections have different widths or depths, calculate each uniform section separately and add the results.

Unit reference

The calculator uses the international definitions 1 foot = 0.3048 meter and 1 inch = 0.0254 meter. The NIST Guide to the SI, Appendix B documents the length and volume conversion factors. Source reviewed 2026-10-05.

Scope and limitations

  • The user supplies net length, uniform width, uniform depth, and a waste percentage.
  • The calculation does not include pads, piers, columns, walls, slabs, reinforcement, keyways, haunches, or overlaps unless they are deliberately included in the entered rectangular dimensions.
  • The calculator does not determine beam size, reinforcement, loads, soil capacity, foundation behavior, or code compliance.
  • Use dimensions from applicable plans or a qualified professional. Verify ordering quantities and placement allowances for the actual site.
